I believe Manson was originally sentenced to death. However, the SCOTUS subsequently ruled the death penalty to be cruel and unusual in the early 70's. That decision was overturned in later years but Manson had his sentence commuted to life and the death penalty couldn't be reinstated to those who were already commuted.
