Dads: What does Father's Day mean to you?

As a relatively new dad, I think more and more about raising my son to be better than me, whether it's home life and financial situation, or achieving things in life that escaped me. Most of all, personally, I want to be a better dad than mine was. Everyone's situation is different, but I wonder how many agree that raising a kid is almost like a chance to correct anything that didn't go just right when you were growing up. Not living vicariously, but a chance to 'get it right'?
Not concerned about what anyone got today. Just curious about thoughts on what fatherhood really means to you OT dads....

I'm now the protector of my little girl. Will kill someone without a second thought over her.

That's not a bad way to go, but you will soon see that it's an inadequate philosophy.
Attempts to have your child achieve/experience more than you is actually very similar to living through your child. It's hard to escape it. Just try to keep it in check.
You'll see that your children will be unique and will differ from you in significant ways. The goal will be just to help them achieve what's best for them.

It reminds me of how great my father was in the 9 short years he was here with me on this earth and how wonderful my kids are in spite of all the mistakes I've made.

It's about not being treated anything like your wife expects to be treated on Mother's Day.

My first kid is a week old today.
Basically sharing your sentiments, OP. And my father is an amazing guy and an incredible role model.
