If this girl was bullied they should be the personal servants of the embalmers, pallbearers, and funeral procession- if nothing else so they can be identified and shamed.

I made the terrible mistake of going to the father's facebook page. Such a happy looking family.

Granted I don't have kids, but it's simple: Don't give it to them. I may budge if and when I have one, but I wouldn't get my kid a cell phone until they're 13 and that would just be a go phone, and then not give them a smart phone until they're 17. frick the peer pressure.

I do and I agree with you. In the end they are the child and you are the parent. You and I are probably going to get a lot of flack for this position, but it will be from the parents who let their kids dictate what they do, not the other way around.

social media wasn't even a thing when I was a kid, and my dad didn't allow me to have a cell phone until I was 16, and only then because I was driving and he wanted me to have it in case of an accident or a break down.

I've 0 intentions on allowing my kids to be on social media at such a young age. There's quite literally nothing to be gained.

Agreed, but how can you tell kids that these days? 10 year olds have smart phones and practically unlimited access to social media apps...and these companies WANT them to grow up on their platforms and develop a dependency on them.

My 11 year old son has a cell phone to contact me for pickup after practices and/or playing at friends’ houses. He knows that he isn’t allowed to have any social media accounts at all until he’s 18 years old and that he will lose the phone, Xbox and laptop for a minimum of 3 months if he ever breaks that rule.

I would not be surprised if he has an account under a different name, and he's simply told his friends he had to do that or he'd be in trouble.

Sorry, not trying to be a dick. I just know how sneaky I was.

This is where being a parent comes in.

My kids have iphone, ipad, xbox, etc. They cannot change a thing on any of those without me knowing.

You can lock all these items down if you want. You can also lock down what they can see on the Internet. You can review what they have been looking at as well.

You cannot control their friends and their parents, but you can make sure you always have open conversations with them and let the rules be known.

I doubt my kids will ever have a facebook account and I preach to other parents to not let their kids have them. My basis of the argument is social media is forever and they will be judged by their actions as a teenager forever. I could not imagine having my childhood follow me into my professional world. I said and did some really dumb things.

The social media risk is not worth the reward.

Yeah. I’m not stupid, either. However:

1) an account under a different name is less likely to stick to him long term
2) he’s forced to hide his internet history on all devices because I do check them and ask what’s up if it’s erased
3) I refuse to give him his own Apple account so everything he downloads goes through mine making it traceable
4) I’m good friends with his 3 best buddies’ Parents AND many of the “in” girls’ moms. We all share info with each other about what’s happening within their circle
5) all I can do is make it extremely difficult and hopefully not worth it.

This, I have a 5 year old daughter and while I haven't decided on concrete age limits for social media she won't be getting on any of these platforms for quite some time.

I wonder how much suicides have increased with school aged kids since the social media era has started. There's always been child suicides but they have seemed to increase.
