OUACHITA PARISH, La. (KNOE) - The mother of a 17-year-old who was killed in February is speaking out. Alyssa Neitz was shot in Fairbanks.

Her mother, Jennifer Neitz, said last week, she received a phone call from the District Attorney's office asking her the most challenging question since her daughter's death. She said they asked if she would be okay with the suspect serving five years probation.

Not sure how I feel about this. The kid was 13 years old that shot her. That’s certainly old enough to know the consequences of ones actions and should be held accountable, but if you send a 13 year old away for ten years you might as well lock them up for life, that person will never be a functioning member of society.

The suspect is a 13-year-old. Witnesses told KNOE, the suspect put a gun to Alyssa's head, telling her it was not loaded and to prove it, he pulled the trigger. She died the same night.

Extrodinarily negligent but it does sound like a kid being stupid and an accident. If I were the girls Dad I would want to kill the guy myself though.

Sad that this is true. Prison system is that fricked.

13 is 8th or 9th grade. Plenty old enough to know what you're doing when it comes to shooting and killing someone. Someone failed that kid on learning gun safety.

She said she believes if the suspect would have been "arrested for these crimes he did before, months before he killed Alyssa," she would possibly still be alive.

"He slipped through the cracks then, let's not let it happen again," Neitz said. "Let's do something about this before it's somebody else's kids that this happens to."

Hmm...I wonder what she's referring to. Was the kid one that played around or threatened people with guns before?

You would think. Unfortunately there are some full grown idiots out there. My ex MIL got a gun for Christmas one year and the first thing she did was wave it around, pointing it at everyone.

Hard to find out because he's only 13. No name released. Another article said he was arrested for a theft charge unrelated to the shooting.

no problem, 13yo gets probation, BOTH parents and owner of gun get hard time, only way to stop the madness is to stop the cycle...

I don't think he has both parents. I saw another article stated his brother was also in jail.

I’d be fine with that. Somebody has to be held responsible for a young girl losing her life. Either the idiot that shot her or the parent(s) of said idiot.

the issue is not one of punishment, that accomplishes nothing, the real issue for all of us is leadership, setting an example for our young people to understand what is right from wrong, what it is to respect each other, making the right decisions and the consequences of making those decisions...

Speaking of Ouachita Parish...have they finally indicted the meth heads who killed the Sonnier kid in April of 2015? Man that was a sad situation.

The kid was slapped with 10+ burglary charges after the murder arrest.
He also had multiple pictures on his Facebook posing with various guns.
