Crawfish Price sets Record High

Crawfish prices that buyers give to fishermen and farmers hit an all time high of $8.00 per pound today up from $6.50 last week. In addition, some buyers in Acadiana are already paying 50 cents to a dollar over market price to try and entice crawfish producers to sell their catch to them instead of their usual outlets.
Unprecedented supply shortages due to this past fall's extended drought and extreme heat have caused the price of live crawfish to double since the beginning of November when the market price was $4.00 per pound.
Crawfish mortality and other effects damaging the crawfish crop has occurred due to the atypical weather conditions but the extent and timeframe for recovery of the catch are unknown at this time. Best case scenario at this time indicates that the wild caught basin fisheries and improved pond populations could start to produce increased harvests in a couple of months once weather warms and spring floodwaters and snowmelt reach the Atchafalaya Basin.
This pbs.org article explains the difficulties and dynamics of the crawfish shortage that the industry is facing currently. Despite record prices the economic outlook is poor for farmers and fishermen since minimal amounts are being caught and profits from sales are not enough to offset increased labor, bait, fuel and energy costs due to the small volumes.

Not quite the case this time unfortunately.
ETA:Too bad the mindless morons that repeat these same gotcha lines in every crawfish thread don't have half a brain to understand that this low supply/high demand situation is dictating the fricking ALL TIME RECORD HIGH price of live crawfish. Nobody but a completely ignorant idiot can say that this scenario has played out before much less every year.

“So how does this affect crawfish prices?”

Could you go back and show data averages for amount harvested and sales price for the past three years so you can back up your claim?

Lol. No doubt.
The crazy thing about the situation is that some people believe that the record price hasn't even peaked yet as we haven't reached the annual higher demand events such as Superbowl Sunday, Mardi Gras and Ash Wednesday.
Also with Lent and Easter being so early this year, there will be a reduced expectation that the catch will increase enough to be adequate and meet supply demands at these times.

listen...
it's been too hot, it's been too cold, there hasn't been enough rain, it's been raining like crazy, the Groundhog didn't see his shadow... you just don't understand this business.
wish they would come out and admit the truth.... others have been unjustly raising their prices (shout-out Raising Cane's).... just admit that you want to get in on the price gouging. just admit it

My bait supplier is paying over market price at $9.00/lb. The highest price I have ever sold at in my whole life is $5.00/lb. Nobody and I mean nobody wants to get in on the racket more than I do right now. Unfortunately I am not even fishing my ponds currently because the minimal catch is not economical at the moment despite the record price.

I keep records going back 20 years in a spreadsheet the 20 historical avg price for this week is $2.93lb. Last year this week was $3.10lb for reference. Now keep in mind that’s to the farmer but still that’s on average $5lb more than normal. So it’s not the same shite different year but you already know that you are just wanting to complain about something.

Every year something causes an issue with crawfish and we are to expect higher prices. So... Same shite different year

The truth is the drought killed off a good portion of the crawfish that was seeded this summer. If you don’t believe me idk what else to tell you. But y’all will really be screaming if we end up getting the cold weather that’s forecasted for next week. That will end up killing the little bit of crawfish that is actually out there

Great mindset frick the people that are trying to make a living by working to supply a product that is a luxury for people to have and enjoy. People like you are scum of the earth that think you’re entitled something for nothing.

Get after it then Bubba Gump.
Farmers have no say in setting the price at any time in any year.
