He's sort of interested in the SL coupe/AMG's but he hates how boxy up front they've become. 911's are the front runner right now.
We may visit Aston, but I've only heard horror stories about them mechanically (albeit years ago) so keeping away from them. Same deal for Jaguars.

OP, this is a good choice, but stick with higher end product. Also, have your Dad have the dealership run the VIN through the service department to ensure regular maintenance was performed.

You are way wrong about Jaguar. Ford really upped Jaguar's game. Before Ford, they were pretty terrible.

you have to be trolling about ford "upping" jaguars game.... ford almost ruined jaguar. they put the jaguar body on a ford taurus frame. this guy is all american made wow

My neighbor has one of the new Jag F-types. It's pretty bitchin. He's a car guy, so for him to buy a Jag says a lot. He says its the first Jag he's ever driven that didn't need a JTR kit.

The great thing about the 911 is that it does everything really well. When my friend had his it was his only car for about 40,000 miles. The guys at Brian Harris got a kick out of that, since most of the cars they sell get babied. You can take a road trip across the country in it with no problem, and you can drive it to work every day. The front trunk fits an Igloo 45qt ice chest perfectly and in a pinch it would fit 7 people going home from Bogies.

VetteGuy is completely on the spot. Before Ford bought them, Jaguar made some of the most unreliable, and shitty assembled vehicles on the market. There's probably not a single system that Jaguar has that Ford didn't improve on. That's not saying the cars themselves were the most stylish or in demand, but the build quality and reliability standards were undeniably raised greatly by Fords ownership. Hell, the electrical systems pre-Ford were quite possibly the worst ever engineered and manufactured by a well known company.
Don't know why you seem to have some kind of hard on for the guy, but those last two post of yours are not doing you any favors and make you seem pretty foolish.
I don't know the man personally, but I do know enough about the subject of cars and bikes to know that VetteGuy is usually spot on with his input.

Doesn't Ford now own Aston too? Their newer cars all have a very Aston-esque look to the front of their cars imo. I would guess Newer ones would be ok too??

This seems to be very good at what my father would like... He'd like it to be quieter than a Z4 too when he tested one out a few years back

Ford sold Aston in 2006:
In 2006, an internal audit led Ford to consider divesting itself of parts of its Premier Automotive Group. After suggestions of selling Jaguar Cars, Land Rover, or Volvo Cars were weighed, Ford announced in August 2006 it had engaged UBS AG to sell all or part of Aston Martin at auction
Ford had a huge impact on Jaguar, as Sayre (thanks) mentioned. They bought them first and kept them the longest, selling Jaguar to TATA in 2010. Jaguar has consistently led in JD Power. They owned Rover as well, but did not make the quality investment that they did in Jaguar.

They did. During the recession Ford avoided bankruptcy partly though selling their premium brands: Jaguar/Land Rover went to Tata of India, Volvo went to Chinese owners, and Aston is owned by a group of private investors. The similarities with newer Fords is no coincidence though, they have many of the same designers. All 3 companies have have done great work since the split. Aston recently inked a deal to use Mercedes AMG engines in their next line of cars.

My wife's XF has been bulletproof, enough so that I bought one for myself last year. It looks like TATA has kept up the quality standards and dealership visits have been minimal.

I thought the same thing but it looks like the owners have been hands off completely. Check out the brand new XC-90. The thing is insane... For a Volvo.

never got a CPO car, but do like getting 8-10 year old 7 series cars. Got the 750 for $7,800. That was a $100k car in 2003. Still has less than 100k on the dash.
