I missed it at the Finance Company that was my 1st job outta college.
Came back from lunch to my Boss trying to type loan docs and stuff who said the local constabulary picked up Denise for embezzlement. Seems she and local car stereo dealer had a scam going as well as Denise stealing cash loan payments.
She would run some bogus car audio loan contracts through our system and split the checks with the dealer (90 day same as cash deals). So the sudden closure of a once popular Stillwater, OK car audio shop is now explained eh? Yeah, that guy got hauled off to the pokey too.
Investigation started prior to my Boss catching those 2 getting it on the office stockroom. Couple of nasty fat freaks. Denise was already on her 3rd husband and 1 kid by each at the time too (think she was around 28 years old).

I've never heard of someone getting arrested by MPs for missing a drill weekend. I have a friend who was in the Marine Reserves that just quit going for over a year. His unit got activated and sent to Iraq, his commander called him a little less than 24hrs before they left and told him to report or he'd go to jail. Though I guess the commander of the NG unit might've just been a stickler for rules.
I can't imagine that being the case. ONE weekend? Most COs are gonna mark them as present and move on, and even the ones are that are real dickheads and call the MPS, MPs aren't out to embarrass people. They would go to the guy's house and see what's what before showing up at his job.
I arrested a lot of AWOL soldiers in my time, and the norm was 72 hours or more of missed duty before being reported. Because sometimes shite happens. Had a case once where a dickhead CO reported a guy AWOL 3 hours after he was supposed to report for duty , turns out the guy had been in a car accident the night before and was in the hospital. I finally found him and reported my findings to his CO, a-hole still wanted to press charges I just walked out of his office and went straight to the base commander.

I'm sure it was well beyond paying the $40 late fee. The video store had a warrant issued on him for theft by deception.

Ya, I think it really depends on the unit.
We had a guy that worked offshore, he would just take a month or two off of work and go work at the unit. He'd be done for the year after that. But my unit was pretty cool about that. The other unit across the street was way more strict, but I dont think would have even called the cops or sent MPs. They just issue a warrant and you get arrested when you f up.

Correct. Not paying a late fee isn't a criminal act.

I have a couple relatives in the FBI. They’re honestly come off as awkward

More than a few FBI agents have law degrees. That isn't unheard of by an means. You'd be surprised at the number of medical doctors who are FBI agents as well.
And chemists and biology majors.

Hell, the FBI even has some agents who are archeologists lol. Even a few who have the dreaded liberal arts degrees. I mean you sometimes need agents who are specialized in field like art.

Or, your friend is a lawyer and.... a crazy person who makes up stories ?. Or better yet, just a crazy person. Always possible. I've met several FBI agents over time. My in laws neighbor was an FBI agent (still is, just moved). Never knew it was a secret position.
Not FBI here but pretty similar. We're technically not allowed to "advertise" our position or especially reveal it on paper where it can be proven we did as much. It's just another layer of protecting your identity and therefore safety, nothing about the secrecy of what we / the government are doing.
It's not a tinfoil hat thing, it's a safety thing that's more of a guideline than a rule. I've only seen them enforce it once and that was because the guy was using his position and badge in a bar setting trying to impress some ladies and got caught red handed.

When I was a younger man, and single, the type of woman I was chasing wouldn't have been impressed with knowing I was law enforcement.

There was a fairly popular show called Justified at the time and it made US Marshals seem way cooler than reality. It was a good show, but didn't exactly represent what US Marshals actually do on a daily basis.
I did notice some of MY FRIEND'S coworkers trying to take advantage of the limited popularity at the time

If they filed suit/judgements etc on him then that 40 dollars likely turned into hundreds of dollars if not over a thousand

I was Army CID. Now if you watch some of the NCIS shows and such you would think "damn , not stop action and danger" and while I had more action and danger in my career than I needed, most of my job consisted of talking to people, and writing reports for other people to read.
I actually saw more action when I was a young MP on night duty on a Saturday night in some shite base where the only things to do on the weekend were get drunk and fight. And that was the MPs

MP's came to my job,
I didn't have to pay for a lawyer and I was far more concerned with clearing my name with my 1st Sergeant than I was with clearing my name with Movies2Go.
Plus, like I said, the video store lied in their report and had me arrested so frick giving them a dollar.

I worked with a guy who was arrested at work, but it happened before I started there. His ex wife pressed charges on him, apparently she claimed he tried to hit her in his truck and it was some attempted murder situation.
He had to go to trial, I was working there when that happened, but he had to miss some time during the whole situation. He went to court, was found not guilty or maybe he got probation for something.. I don't remember, but for some reason, the week he got his legal problems worked out, they fired him.

$40? Wow! I was about to say I hope they shut down.. But considering they were a movie rental place, they are probably shut down now.

Yeah, they closed a couple years later (incident was in 2002). I should have just got a Blockbuster card but went with the local place because it had the 'back room'.
