IMO it seems to be moreso the newer types - they move here because they're so stoked about living "on the Northshore!" and so excited about their houses and things and lives, and they love to talk about them and compare...it's kinda overboard. I guess the NS kinda attracts those types to sort degree. Whereas the natives are more like, "yeah I'm here, I like it." All that shite isn't as big of a deal.
The fault of a lot of natives or long-termers is they've had the same group of friends their whole lives and aren't really looking to add on or make an effort trying to.
I agree. We moved here out of necessity and because my SO is from here. I was previously unaware that the NS was a thing. I'd been here, liked the area much better than where we were living, and it is definitely more convenient for the things we need.
And you're right about the natives. There are some super nice people. I have met very few who have just been complete assholes. That's not at all what I'm saying. It's just a totally different dynamic than what I'm used to. They're very nice people, but you're very aware that most people are only interested in being acquaintances. And this is the experience of a lot of the transplants here. It's just very insulated.
ETA: We haven't been here very long. I'm still hopeful I will find my tribe and maybe grow to like it one day.

I don't know. I have this conversation with other people who aren't from here, and they always agree. I have this conversation with people from here and I get blank looks. I think some people enjoy being that way, but I think most people just don't realize it.

Come hang out with my niece (she's white) and her adopted black children in Nola. Then go with her to the NS. I know it's one small example, but the difference in treatment is incredible.
That smells like bullshite or your niece is projecting. I see white parents with adopted black and Asian children frequently at the Koop drive playground and at the playground next to Mandeville's town hall. It's not frowned upon, it's also not that rare.

All I'm going to say is we weren't exactly nice to minorities in school.

Wow, I really think you arrived here with preconceived notions and you are unwilling to part with them as you seek out affirmation of your feelings. We've been on the NS for 14 years and my wife and her friends who are in their early forties, in good shape do not wear yoga pants, many have no extracurricular for their children and do not judge others on whether they fit some mold. Some of them drive older cars , some drive minivans and some drive luxury cars...nobody seems to care. Some buy clothes at target, some at tjmaxx, some at Macy's and nobody cares. Some have husbands who are professionals and some have husbands who are skilled labor and nobody cares. When my kids do play sports, the majority of parents, from a varied set of backgrounds get along well.
I vaguely recall you started a thread a few years ago about your pending move to the NS and you were apprehensive before even arriving. I'm not trying to insult, but, I suspect the issue might be yours, not the NS's.

And the kids in nola schools were?
Kids are stupid everywhere.

I wasn't apprehensive about moving here at all. In fact, it was the exact opposite. But, I do concede that I might just be missing these varied people. I know a lot of people love it here. I just haven't found it to be all that welcoming. But, I do have friends here who feel the same way, as do other people. I'm assured by my friends who have been here longer that not everyone is an automaton, but it takes time to find them. Like I said, I hold out hope. My kids love it here, so that's worth staying. The good news is, if it still sucks when they're older, there's nothing keeping saying I have to stay.
I find this argument to be much like the NOLA/NS arguments. People who love it don't see the problem. People who don't are always given the "must be you" line. Except it's not just me. Nor are you alone in loving it and the people.

Dude the NS doesn't deserve the racist reputation it gets. Most people are generally accepting. However, if you lean racist, you're probably going to pick a place like mandeville over Nola. And when you add those bad apples up, you get a more racist community. It's noticeable to people who spend a lot of time in each. My own family is subdivided this way.

It's not just you, it's you and others who don't fit in. The Northshore is for rich, kinda pretentious white people, and there's nothing wrong with that.

I'm probably jealous of people who are happy where they live. I'll definitely give you that. But, definitely not wishing I could be different so I could fit in if that's what you mean. I just like a little more variety in the people I meet and socialize with. Rich doesn't bother me one bit. Pretentious is what drives me crazy.

Unless you're colored, that is. In that case, you need to point yourself due south and walk until you hit the MS river.
