Court appointed attorneys

You are 21 years old and finishing up college... You are out drinking with some buddies on a saturday night. You get really drunk and being the young dumb renegade you are, you end up breaking a car window for any one reason. End up getting arrested and are charged with public intoxication and a misdemeanor criminal mischief.
You work 40 hours a week at the local lumberyard to help get through school and make 12 dollars an hour. You don't make much, but it helps with expenses and you are eeking by.
You wake up in a drunk tank that morning surrounded by many folks that are im the same position every weekend. They have no job or bounce around jobs and bounce around doing nothing or contributing to society.
You see the judge, as do these others... You are told you will be released on your recognizance. But you will have an arraignment in about 3 weeks. You are informed that you make to much money to be appointed a court appointed attorney. After that news... Joe Criminal is told the number to the local court appointed attorneys office and given multiple resources to his law situation.
You make ok money and have 300 dollars in your bank account after bills and rent. No lawyer will take that up for a fee, you are in now in a big bind. What do you do? Lifelong criminals can skate the system... but you are screwed.
This is all hypothetical and something I have thought about... why do we reward people who contribute nothing to society and never learn lessons, compared to someone who works hard, pays their bills and made one mistake... doesn't make sense to me. Do the crime, do the time... I get it. Just seems like it's a messed up system. What say you OT?

Clearing under 25k, before taxes, doesn't disqualify you from public representation. And clearly we need more innocent poor people bogging the system down. My guess is it is significantly cheaper to give them representation than it is to lock them up, and the whole constitution 6th amendment thing.

Fair enough, I am pretty sure I heard that if you make over 12 dollars an hour you are not afforded public representation.
I understand a PI isn't a big deal, but a criminal mischief change can be something you probably need a lawyer for.

It’s not that hard to qualify, honestly. That or some attorney’s office will work with you on payments.

to save you some effort of using google i ventured to the louisiana public defender board and got their response. quote:

That $12 figure puts you right at what automatically qualifies, with 0 question. It's quite a leap that $680 a year over the 200% of poverty automatically disqualifies you.

Unfortunately most of the time this is a decision about priorities . People do not want to make any sacrifice for an outcome. Maybe a person doesn’t need an IPhone for a year and needs an attorney more. Maybe cable needs to be cancelled. Maybe there is something that can be sold. I think if people really need a doctor or lawyer or really anything in their life.... if it is a priority then there is a way.
