The couple had accepted that by not reserving seats, there could be consequences.
There could be consequences no matter what. If the plane had 10 less seats, somebody is getting bumped. Doesn't matter if everyone reserved a seat.
Not checking in is the real issue, if that happened. If so, they did FAFO.
Otherwise, airlines will typically ask for volunteers before bumping.

I don’t get how this happens. The airlines know the number of seats on the plane. They sold the tickets. Not “reserving” a specific seat shouldn’t matter
This.
Airlines suck

Airlines oftentimes overbook, betting that some won't show up.
This is the answer. Airlines and hotels do this to make sure they get a full house even if a couple of people don’t show up.
Hotels call it “getting walked” when you show up and are denied your reservation due to overbooking. To reduce the risk, always book direct—don’t use a third-party booking platform like Expedia or you’ll be at the top of the list to get denied a room. Join the loyalty program. Get their app and do digital check-in as soon as it opens so your room is “spoken for.” The risk goes up the later you arrive to check-in and rooms get claimed.

First they say:
Later they say:
Overbookings happen. Happen all over the world. If you try a “hack” to go cheap then you are first on the block. Common sense.
Sounds like that “hack” friked them in the end.

After going back and forth, we said we’re not going to take separate flights and be in separate countries for hours,” he said.

Flying together and sitting together is not the same thing.
Not a hack. Its a basic economy ticket offered by the airline.

Flights overbook. It is annoying but it is also life. Here is a hack…if you check in and it is overbooked they may offer you a voucher on your next trip. Have taken a few trips on the airliners dime due to their incompetence

I've always wanted to be able to take them up on it, but I've never had the extra time.

Yeah i had a round trip Spirit fought to Colombia leave me on the way back in Fort Lauderdale. I had to fly SWA home. The one leg SWA ticket cost me $300. The round trip to Colombia was $180. I was pissed. Spirit only have me back the base rate for the one missed leg which was $39.

Do you buy an entire row or only fly on jets with single seat rows? How otherwise can you avoid this?

That is the chance you take but we are way ahead on our successful sub $200 direct flights currently
Also I am 5 foot nothing so my backpack under the seat is a not a leg room problem.

Fly first class with my spouse. Fly first class where there’s only one seat on the side for whatever reason.
I can’t always avoid it, but I do my best.
