Never done it before but am looking at either replacing mine or having to get a new part for it. It’s about 10 years old. I was quoted a replacement cost and based on my research it seems ridiculously high, but maybe I’m not considering something right.

Anyone care to tell me what they’ve paid in the past to replace their gas furnace?

You shouldn't have to replace it. Those things last forever. What's the quote you got to fix it? And what's wrong with it?

I'd be finding out who installed that and asking them questions. No reason why you should have to replace at 10 years of use.

AC units last for 10-15 years, gas furnaces 15-20 years. Even then, gas furnaces shouldn't have to be "replaced". They can be fixed to run forever

The inducer motor is starting to fail. The quoted price to replace that part is close to $1,000. Also was recommended that we get the unit cleaned which they quoted me at $500. Also was told that “the left chamber had blow back and unequal flame as the fan kicked on. This is sometimes caused by a crack in the heat exchanger.” They didn’t find any cracks, but sometimes hairline cracks aren’t visible. They don’t think it’s leaking but recommend we keep a carbon monoxide alarm in the furnace room.

I thought the average lifespan was about 15 years. If I lived alone I would probably just repair it and let it ride, but I have a toddler and am hyper sensitive to carbon monoxide risk.

Has a ten year warranty that is about to expire, but the technician said he can’t say for certain that it’s leaking and the fact that my sensitive carbon monoxide alarm that is right next to it hasn’t picked up anything makes me think it’s ok, for now. However, I may get a second opinion and see if I can maybe make a warranty claim.

With a toddler, and the fact that I will need to put about $1,500 into it now anyway, even if there’s no warranty claim I’m thinking it’s better to just replace it if that cost isn’t unreasonable.

10 years is very early in its life span.

I replaced my 22-year old Lennox system this summer. Two furnaces/blowers, one 2 ton condenser and coil (the other condenser and coil were recently replaced) with a 14-SEER Goodman system. Goodman is builder grade so pretty cost effective.

Total cost: $5,400.

Is that the total cost of just the parts, or parts + cost to have a company install?

Parts and install. I got three quotes, both Goodman were 5,400-5,900 and a Carrier was quoted at 6,700.

Wow. This guy quoted me $6,911 for just a Goodman new furnace replacement, model GMVC96. I’m in Pennsylvania so cost of living is probably a little higher, but that seems absolutely ridiculous.

I think I found that model online for $1,500, including shipping. Cost to install should be something like $250/hr for 8 hours, brining total cost to around $3,500. I just can’t beliece that he’s really trying to quote me two times more than what it should cost.

I wrote back to the guy asking to clarify if he’s just quoting me for a furnace replacement or for entire system replacement (new furnace, air conditioner, and coil).

Pretty sure it was just furnace, but it’s so outrageous I just want to make sure I’m not minsunderstanding him.

So yeah, this motherfricker is quoting me $6,900 to simply replace my gas furnace with a Goodman gas furnace (value brand).

I’m calling around to get other quotes/evaluations.

I replaced my inducer motor for about $200. Unplugged the old one, three screws, plugged new one in. Took about 10 minutes.

The only reason I have replaced a gas furnace was due to cracked heat exchanger.

Post your furnace make in model and we can probably find you a how to on youtube and a replacement part.

Just watched a YouTube video on how to do the replacement, doesn’t look too difficult. But honestly I would pay for peace of mind knowing a professional did it since if I screw it up it somehow it could be life or death.
