Somebody will find a way to profit from brine and make money from it.
I've heard of companies that are already doing that. I believe that lithium and other rare-earths can be extracted from the brine.

Lots of research being done on it, and small scale projects. I think getting the water to the necessary specs is still EXTREMELY expensive.
Desalination has been quite affordable in lots of nations at large scale for decades. All it takes is a little waste heat (steam) to accomplish with evaporators. Better check your research sources as being fake. Salinity is higher in the Med and Persian Gulf.
It really wasn't that expensive to use RO for boiler water (purer than drinking water) in Libya for a proposed refinery, as far as capital expense. More expensive but lower opex for evaporators using surplus steam as low as 15 psig

Today the Corpus water supply, dropped below 12 % . Previous comparable low level was back in 1967. But the real story is the population over that period has grown 4 times.
It will be interesting to see how much of that 11.9 % is useable as the uneven terrain over the long distance will cause pooling at some point with no run off. When we see dozens of big back hoes cutting ditches to sop up the last 5% maybe the issue will be accepted as fact.

I think the folks around Monroe way are not in full understanding about the effect of that huge AI data center being built. Oh, well..., who needs water and cheap electricity, anyway?

It's for cooling and the Mississippi River is a hop skip and a jump away.
Industry in Lake Charles uses water from the Sabine River Authority 20+ miles away.

Corpus is known for Selena and wind...that's about it. Not in any way shape a form an "Energy Powerhouse". It's always been a backwater that is just on the cusp of booming......but it never booms.
Locals that leave town and go to college, do not usually return. Serious brain drain in that town.

Will we ever embrace desalination plants?
Whoever invents a low energy and low environmental impact way of doing this will be a trillionaire.
Right now it takes almost as much as energy to desalinate as is burned up by the energy plants it feeds.
I think this will be the printing press of this generation, however, and it'll happen in the next 30-40 years.

Musk is trying to drain the Memphis aquafer for his stuff. Fresh water in reliable amounts found cheaply will change the world so much it's wild to think about.

There's a Data center breaking ground near Amarillo that's going to have water issues as well.
I'd like to know what's said in these backroom negotiations, where a company knows full well there aren't resources available to maintain long term operations and yet they greenlight the projects.

Trump needs to piss off a lot of these frickers and issue an immediate national moratorium on these data centers before the entire country's drinking water is in jeopardy!
Are we that much of a whore to money that we are going to allow Amazon, Google, Microsoft and META
to come in and just frick up our environment and lives??
We need to pump the brakes - NOW
EVERY city with these massive data centers across the country will be running out of water in 18-24 months.

Until they decide to pipe in the water from offshore and discharge the brine several miles offshore they will never get the first piece of dirt moved for a plant.

Just like those that promise cheap clean water via atmospheric condensers, the economics and energy inputs just don't work out.
Nuclear Fusion reactors will be a watershed moment for technological innovation.
