Do doctors yet know whether the virus is likely to cause permanent damage even in people who recover?

It does happen in a decent percentage of those who are hospitalized. What that actual rate is, who knows. I’ve heard it was one in five patents admitted to ICU.

More specifically it is that their lungs show a high degree of diffuse scar tissue that cuts back on lung capacity. “Permanent” might be too harsh of a term, especially this early. Long term is prob more appropriate.

Probably about the same amount of long term damage any other flu does

Good post.
I appreciate people who don't jump to conclusions without evidence.

Corona Permanent Damage?

I heard a doc on TV say the virus can wreak havoc on lung tissue. I'm not sure if that is permanent but I suspect an elderly survivor would have potential COPD problems going forward.

Causes 100% permanent lung damage in hose who don't recover.

For those that do, roughly 30% will require ileostomies and 50% will suffer significant scarring of the lung tissue, enough to impact their lives.

It's a question being raised with not just the lungs, but with heart failure that may be related to COVID-19 infections.

We don't know the etiology yet or overall outlook.
