No, it's not a joke. Scientists have invented a way to create single cell protein from carbon dioxide and electricity.

quote:

TAKE one serve of carbon dioxide. Apply high voltage. Wait a few weeks ... and enjoy a meal of single-cell protein. It may not be a culinary delight, but it could feed our future.

quote:

But it may soon be reducing the strain on our crops by providing an alternative source of fodder for animal feeds.

Ultimately, protein ‘reactors’ have the potential to create the building blocks of meals aboard long-duration space flights and as a rapid-response counters to famine.
“In the long term, protein created with electricity is meant to be used in cooking and products as it is,” says Juha-Pekka Pitkänen, principal scientist at VTT. “The mixture is very nutritious, with more than 50 per cent protein and 25 per cent carbohydrates. The rest is fats and nucleic acids.”

So what? I can create protein with nothing more than my hand and a little imagination.

And I'm sure it's extremely cost prohibitive, so I can't wait to hear about the next big discovery that'll save the world next week

Except they are using microbes to do it.

Well maybe this will help the 2100 people that die everyday day due to starvation or starvation illnesses but probably not :/

Sounds like this was a byproduct of abiogenesis research.

Are you saying they didn't create it?

They aren't planning on feeding anyone with it.

It's to have an alternative to grains to feed animals with.

So there are more grains for people.

Most technology is initially. I'm curious what voltage is required to run this and what the shelf life of the product is.

May be high voltage but low amps and therefore not need that much electricity.

Yes they are. They will start with animals but will be used for human consumption.

IF it's solar, then the price is going to be cheap. However, a coffee cup size reactor only producing a spoon full in 2 weeks isn't going to work.
