Not a CM grad, but currently an estimator client side for theme parks. I work +60 hours a week. Love the work, but the burnout starting to get real. Would never do residential though. Was a workers comp auditor out of college and saw their books and their work. Just not exciting enough for me to want to consider.

no offense but anyone can estimate

Anyone can also project manage. If you can’t do both, then you shouldn’t be in the industry or you’re green. And if you think estimating is just math, you probably don’t really get it.

I probably said that wrong. I should have said I work for a company that is in one of the major trades (structural steel). The company I work for is not one of the "big boys" like Schuff, W&W, SME, etc. We're more like a medium sized regional company.

How much are your pricing primary and secondary steel at right now per ton? Rough cost all in. Fab, detailing, materials, etc.

That's a loaded question lol. I'll give an answer any good estimator would and say, "It depends."

But it seriously does. How big is the building? Is it a nice rectangle or are there a bunch of radiused sides? Single story or multiple? Seismic code? There's just a lot of factors in a price, but I'd have to look back to see where we are. You in the structural industry?

I’ve got buddies in industrial and I have no desire to do what they do. If not wanting to get shipped off somewhere to work 7 days a week during a turnaround is not wanting to work hard then yeah you can say that. I’ve also got no desire to do any civil work either. I think my day to day life would suck.

Ha I’m client side on a multi billion dollar project that hits all typical DOWs, A&E, and ride and show. Starts off just estimating and that leads into cost control.

We have “average” primary and secondary steel cost with some subs. It was originally for guys doing carved plaster and rockwork but we started extending to other subs. Buildings for the most part are square. I’m probably making it sound much more simple than it is.

No chip plant, but was surprised to see the cost of the one in Ohio. Must be an entire campus with an insane amount outside of just the actual plant for 20 billion.

You have no clue what you’re talking about. Pre-Construction is arguably harder than the Construction aspect. The way I’ve always seen it is that you have to have a good Precon Team in order to get the work.

Haha fair. Easier to explain a frickup to a housewife than an engineer/owner that knows more about what you’re putting in than you do though.

Guess you didn't factor in the changes in plans the woman is going to put you through during the project and explaining why it's going to cost more every time she does it.

Why would you need a construction manager on small residential jobs?

some plants hire CM as PMs direct or asstintant PM directly to manage 500k-5m Capital projects.

i am an engineer but have CM guys on the team who run their own projects or assist me when i need help. We all work ~40 hours a week. no being shipped off and TA only like once every 3 years and its like 50 hours a week during TA.

might be something you want to look at.
