I like the mountains in Colorado idea. Do some rafting, jeep tours, mountain biking, etc

This really isn't impossible. If I can help you find a cheap flight up, you can take nj transit or a bus from NYC to Philly to DC for cheap. Bolt Bus, Megabus or Greyhound have $10 fares from NYC to Philly and Philly to DC.

ETA: There's one-way fares to NYC from MSY for $110 and one-way fares from DCA-MSY for $102. Even with four people traveling, that's only around $850 for the airfare

That sounds awesome but I would do a rental, only a few hours apart and I would just park in NY.
