Stay out of Marines.
Probably couldn't get in anyway as an O. I imagine spots at OCS these days are fricking obscene hard to get.

Who here has done this? I am 26 and about 3-4 semesters away from graduating (worked as an EMT for 6 years). I am seriously considering the Air Force, Navy, or Marines. Any advice from people who went this route after school? Is there a way I can get started towards my goal before I graduate? (I saw the marines have a program to work towards your PLC/OCC while in school.) Experience: EMT 6 years/ Fire Fighter 7 years Degree: Industrial Tech @ ULAla
Do not, under any circumstances, enlist. Don't go to an enlisted recruiter. Find an officer recruiter. That may require you to drive to the other side of the state, but it's worth it. An enlisted recruiter will try to get you to enlist and promise "opportunities" to earn a commission within a couple of years. They only care about their quota.
If you enlist in the Navy you will be one unhappy camper while you wait.

I am considering it mostly because I have a few friends in the Marines and I would am interested in a combat oriented role.
I don't know how it works in the other branches but in the Marines it's a little more complicated than that if you're going the O route.

Good advice, unless you are right out of high school with intentions on going the Officer route after enlistment/college. Definitely should find an OSO.

Geauxtiger,
One of the things you also need to really consider is the draw down. The military will be very choosey in what MOSs and slots are available.
In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with enlisting first, getting some NCO time as an E-5 and then going OCS. I was ROTC though. Just get as much information as you can before making any sort of decision. What NavyTiger said is true, go find an OFFICER recruiter.
Honestly, it's not a real fun time to be in the service. 1993's reduction in force looks pale in comparison to what's happening right this minute. I've been in almost 20 years and the changes that I've seen going from a peacetime-to wartime-to peacetime force, have been numerous and not all necessarily for the better.

I did it. Marine Corps Officer, paid off 45k in school debt, put another 35k in the bank. Got out after 4 years at 28 years old. Saw 4 countries, met great people. You have the rest of your life to sit at a desk and get old and fat. I'm now pursuing my MBA using the post 9/11 GI Bill. It is a great choice after college. The only thing I would caution is Navy and Air Force are science types, while Marines and Army are hard chargers, with Marines being above and beyond harder in every respect except length of deployments. Army has OCS classes every few weeks at Ft Benning, while Marines have 3 a year in Quantico. Army deploys much longer than Marines. DO IT.

I concur with others about joining the Air Force. I joined in 1974, separated in 1978, and started a civilian job 2 days after separation in the same field that I was in with the Air Force.
Depending on what job you select, if you have a choice, you can take that experience into civilian life.

Whats the Minimum GPA needed for Commissioned Officers in other branches? The only one I could find was for the AF

It's been a long while since I was commissioned, but it sure as hell wasn't a 3.0 or better

I joined the Army after graduating from LSU. My contract provided I would attend OCS upon successful completion of basic training. When I got to OCS my roommate was a SP4 fresh from advanced individual training. His enlistment contract enabled him to attend AIT to qualify as a field artillery surveyor before his guaranteed assignment to OCS. His attending AIT earned him a serious enlistment bonus for a desired MOS as well as enhanced Veterans Educational Assistance Program contributions from the Army. He got 5:1 matching while I got 2:1 matching.
The moral of my story is do some investigating to find out the needs of the various branches. Take the ASVAP to find out which specialties you qualify for. The services will negotiate to get people to fill shortages in various occupational specialties. Recruiters are rewarded for filling critical enlisted specialties even if the recruits never serve in those capacities. Look for the best deal you can get.

7 years to get a damn ITech degree? The frick are you doing over there? Either you are a shitty student or you have been fricking around the entire time.

If grades are a problem getting an OCS slot maybe you should think about the Army's warrant office program for helicopter pilots.

I started back in school in 2011. Up until two semesters ago I was only taking 9-12 hours per semester because I work a full time job at night (Acadian at first now the Fire Dept) Also took a semester off last fall............

Don't go enlisted if you have a college degree. That would be insanely stupid.
Posted on 2/21/15 at 4:24 pm to geauxtigers6492
If you are interested in a rated slot in the Air Force, the GPA requirement is only a 2.5. So if pilot, navigator, or combat systems officer interests you, you wouldn't need a GPA waiver.

another proof that economy is shite and college is worthless. 15 years ago no one wanted to serve in the military. now there is a waiting list to join.

Its not so much me looking into the military bc the economy is crap, but more because I dont want to grow up and sit behind a desk yet.......or ever. I figured I can put my degree to more use and be more satisfied if I join go this path rather than cooperate America.

fact. if you have a bachelors degree, don't enlist.

Oh you'll sit behind the desk eventually as a staff monkey
But the first six-eight years as an Officer are definitely the fun ones. PL, XO, a little bit of BN Staff time and Command. After command is when you get to run (or juggle and fling poo) the puzzle palace.
