I don't know. I see so many people with a lot of tattoos out and about. I'm starting to think it doesn't really matter just because of sheer numbers. No way all of those people aren't working.

Sort of this. According to this 40% of millenials have at least 1 tattoo. Most put them in places that can be covered if required. They probably aren't generally hiding them though in day to day lives. Gone are the days of assuming someone is a criminal because he has a tattoo.

I have 2 clients who are both pretty cool guys. Both have a policy in place wherein if you have tattoos that can't be hidden with clothing then don't expect to work for their business.

i think that's fair enough of a policy if you want to enforce it.

my wife has a few tats that are visible. she's a stay at home soccer mom and has no aspirations of going into a professional work setting that would lend itself to those rules.

What's funny about making statements like this is they are assuming people give frick about their company policy.

Guess what, nobody gives a shite what they think. I guarantee you they do not have a line of people out the door wanting to go to work for them.

I wont hire anyone for a sales or service position with neck tats or sleeves. A single tat or 2 on the arm is ok as long as its not potentially offensive to of our clients. Sleeves and neck tats usually dont get call backs...even for production positions.
The world need ditch diggers too.

They have one guy who's a ex Marine with military tats on both forearms. He's extremely good at what he does and the bosses love him.

He's required to wear long sleeves year around.

this isn't the 50s.

Unless you're talking about neck and face tats I don't think it's THAT big of a deal. The #2 man in our organization was an OL in college and has a few tats that show beneath his sleeves and it's not an issue. Nobody cares.

You better watch your mouth, this is the OT. Suits all day every day. Home of ugly watches, over blown job titles, and all things not trashy. Adhere to their person beliefs or GTFO.

Tattoos? Trashy
Wear shorts to work? Unforgivable, this is a professional environment.
Yeti coolers? The OT wins theirs at DU and CCA circle jerks
Frat turnities? Sorry you didn't get selected.

I don't understand the point you're trying to make. Nobody gives a shite who you hire and who you don't hire. You act as if your opinion will somehow change what people decide to with their bodies.

So they can't work for you. So what. Congratulations on being so flush with good applicants that you can be picky.

I'm curious about the connection between tattoos and the 3rd world.

I will never get a tattoo because I think needing to put art on my body is kind of silly, but the connection to "trash" and the seedy underbelly is entirely arbitrary and based off of antiquated values from 60 years ago when the only people who got tattoos were prisoners and sailors. If you have such a disdain for tattoos then you simply dislike a lot of people and are likely just a misanthrope.

Not having tatoos isn't going to help them look better at that age.

I don't care what they do with their bodies. I cant hire someone who has tons of visible tats. The point is that managers/owners who don't hire these folks are not stuck-up pricks.

Actions have consequences and if you want to express yourself with lots permanent body art then that makes you unemployable for certain jobs.

In some more conservative areas/industries and if the person has tasteless tattoos or in obnoxious places like the forehead, yes, this is true. It will be getting less and less important as time goes on and boomers are more phased out of the workplace. It's just fashion.

False. You can, you just don't want to. It's fine if you don't want to, that's your business. Just have the balls to say it to their face.

Maybe not to you because you fit the idea of what they deem professional or acceptable. To me, someone who makes a snap judgement because of a tattoo is the definition of a stuck up prick.

Consequences? That implies they will somehow lose the ability to become successful. There are no consequences unless you allow there to be consequences.

Lets put it this way, anyone here who actually owns and operates a successful business would never pass over a qualified employee over a tattoo. This is how I know you frickheads are just parroting each other. Granted, you will not find very many qualified upper level applicants with AK47's tattooed on their face, so it's sort of a non issue. I guarantee you if the best plastic surgeon on the planet had a gummy bear tattooed on his cheek he would still have a line of people out the door waiting to get their tits done.

The reality of this is if you are the best at something, it matters not if you have visible tattoos.

Surely this automatically closes doors in terms of employment and/or potential relationships right?

It really depends on your field. You won't find many hospital administrators with visible tattoos, not that they don't have any, but they wouldn't be visible in their normal work attire.

Relationships, yes. I wouldn't date someone who has tattoos, I'm married now so that irrelevant, but I have friends who feel the same way.

Poor choices according to whom? I would certainly disagree given my current situation.

It's becoming increasingly clear that you aren't in a position to even make decisions based on your personal feelings towards tattoos. You likely work for someone else, and have to abide by their rules. You see, I get to make my own rules, this is where we become different. I am willing to stand by my convictions, while you are willing to conform to someone else's if it means career advancement. I would rather be broke and throwing trash than have to bow to someone.

Makes little difference anyway. I only work 2 or 3 days a week, and if something better to do comes along that number can shrink to 0.

One think I can say with absolute certainty is if you pass over the best applicant because you don't like the way they look, you're setting yourself up for major problems later on down the road. Thankfully I doubt very seriously someone allows you to make those calls, and if they do they aren't critical the company.
