Congratulations! We have created an account for you! WTF is this shite?

I do a lot of shopping online and always choose the “checkout as a guest” option. I have recently noticed that places immediately follow up with a “We have created an account for you” email. What is this?
Is it just notification that they are storing my info or is it some work around to FCC rules so they can sell my info or spam my email? Anyone here on the online sales / marketing side that can offer some insight?

Technically the transaction alone is enough for them to send you emails until you opt out, as far as CAN-SPAM goes.
The account creation is more for retention and tracking purposes. They hope you come back and shop with them again since you already “have an account”. Then when you do shop again, they can link the next purchase to this past purchase and build a more complete customer profile on you.

I’m sure that somewhere, in all of that wall of text you scrolled by at lightning speed to get to the “I agree” box, was a few words regarding them being able to open an account for you.

I support the death penalty if email spammers and telemarketers.
