So you’re trying to chastise my family that sent men to die, so your aristocratic, pussified family could continue your way of life?!?!?

Go frick yourself.

It was 160 years ago, its time people got over arguing about the civil war.

Half the nations of the world didn't exist in their current forms at that time. Mindsets have changed, values have changed, let it go.

The mental gymnastics it took to justify slavery are astounding.

Pretty amazing thing when you think about it. Everyone seems to forget the bloodshed to end slavery and save the union.

Do you mean today or do you mean in 1850’s? Because today I completely agree with you, in the 1850’s I don’t.

Many owners did not view them as people, much less equals. They viewed them as an investment like one would make in a plow horse or a tractor today. It doesn’t take mental gymnastics for people to fight for their economic investments to maintain their way of life.

In systematic genocide? Zero. In atrocities committed during war? Hundreds of thousands. Maybe millions. But that's true of just about every nation. That doesn't make it right. However, it does provide perspective.

I don't know anybody who tries to justify it today.

Those are the gymnastics I'm talking about. The Declaration stated all men are created equal. To justify slavery they conveniently denied the humanity of a race due to difference in skin color, native land, etc. They did the same with Manifest Destiny.

Land owners who had slaves should have had their property divided and given to their former slaves.

Is every country in the history of the world evil or stupid, because slavery has existed in every country and culture at some point in time.

i'm not talking about "countries". i'm talking about southern slave owners who didn't see african slaves as people. were they evil or stupid?

Yet also there were voting restrictions on all men. It doesn’t take mental gymnastics to try and maintain the status quo when that status quo is your livelihood.

Were the Roman aristocracy evil or stupid? What about the Dutch? What about the Aztecs? The Inca? The French? The British?

I don't know, but the conquering African tribes that enslaved and sold those men and women to the European tradesmen get a very convenient historical pass

The South seceded over slavery.

The North fought them over tariff / tax revenues.

This doesn’t change the fact that the European powers benefited the most out of slavery.

It's called "white guilt" and it is a very powerful emotion.

About 5% of households owned slaves. Less than 1% owned 50 or more.

The rank and file fought for their state. The aristocracy pushed secession because of slavery.

The average Southerner wasn't complicit in the trade and gets a bad rap.
