Sherman during his March to the Sea, started burning bridges behind his troops because the recently freed slaves were following his army in search of food. At one point 5,000 slaves were trapped on the other side of the river, where Confederate General Wheeler forces were close by, most of the former slaves drowned trying to swim across the river.
You are referring to Davis's troops at Ebeneezer creek. Most didnt drown, but most were dealt with by the confederates following. They do claim several hundred drown though.

This all stems from a fantasy article written a few years ago, there was never any camp of any sort in the Devils Punchbowl, anyone who has ever been there laughs their arse of at the suggestion. The "Punchbowl" is a place a boat could remain hidden just out the river that is inaccessible by land without some major effort. However local urban legends have everything from UFO's, bigfoot, slave camps, devil worshipers, Jean Lafitte s treasure, and lord knows what else down there.
This is kinda what I expected when I read the article. The website it was pulled from seems to exist only to promote "whitey is the devil" propaganda.

While you are right about the accessibility, Learneds Mill Road as I linked in the Country Roads article was in fact a place for refugee slaves. That's about 5000 feet from the DP.
I think the exaggerating comes into the forced labor and treatment/intentional eradication.

Due to the sheer amount of time her day job as a "floater" at WalMart consumes, acclaimed "Paranormal Researcher" Paula Westbrook has not been able to schedule a peer review for her findings.
This story is fantasy. There were indeed documented atrocities committed by both sides against freed slaves during and after the Civil War, however the Devil's Punchbowl is made up. The simple fact remains, if the union had done what it is alleged here by Paula Westbrook then there would be copious records and reports of this. The people of Natchez would have loved an opportunity to chart a record of Union troops committing atrocities. Not to mention a camp that increases the poulation of Natchez TEN fold and there is no record of it? bullshite

Learneds mill road is much farther than that from the DP. I would take Country Roads for what is worth at the news stand.

yea , along Cemetery road. But straight shot is no more than 10k feet. I used to run to it and back when lived in Natchez.

Most of the ones that attempted to swim across the river drown. The one's that didn't attempt to cross the river were recaptured by the confederate troops.

BS, you can not run to the Devils punchbowl, even getting to it is quite a hike from Cementary road, lots of local folks seem to think a high bluff on the side of the road is it but they are off by a ways.
The avarage person would need descending gear to get in there from the top and certianly to get back up.
The thought of a camp down there with thick cement walls is idiotic nonsense.

Stop being a defiant a-hole. I was simply measuring it on Google maps. And I know it's not the bluff directly across from the Main Cemetery Entrance.
Do you have to be a dick to everyone in every post?
And do I know you? You have family land around Anna's Bottom? Or is that LLOG land you calling family land? Or are you one of them? My ex inlaws had a spot in the hills at Anna's Bottom with lots of Deerz. I helped ex FIL pull one out of ravine on Xmas morning about 8 years ago.
