I think there are people who actually believe what you just wrote. But that is a hell of a gamble to take.

There are a lot of people who think like this, Metro-Council member Chauna Banks for one.
If the officers knew Sterling they would know he was a good dude trying to provide for his family.

I've seen stuff like that happen. I've also seen an officer new to an area shoot the neighborhood jackass and have everyone, including other officers mad at him.

It's highly effective, especially in neighborhoods where gangs have controlled things through the residents being fearful of giving information to the police because of retaliation.

When criminals see police officers talking to and interacting residents constantly, they can no longer tell whether people are just having routine friendly interactions or providing information about crimes.

It's good. It's bad. I don't have any experience with it in a legitimate "high crime" area. But there was a very small effort back when I lived in LA to have the neighborhood watch have close ties with the police. Never really gained traction, but we also weren't high crime.

My wife now works in community relations and we live in The Woodlands. She has to deal with the neighborhood watch groups a lot. Some people take that shite seriously here. It's good in the sense that no small thing will get swept under the rug. If a kid spray paints graffiti, be on the look out for a lynch mob. But they'll also take a small rumor and run with it like our community is under attack by thugs and villains. I'd rather the police handle it without their input sometimes. A lot of people probably don't even realize and I only know because of my wife's involvement, but it's almost comical the complaints you hear.

i have no problem with an organization doing what amounts to marketing. Every organization should market themselves. I hope it works for Baton Rouge's benefit.
