Most insurance companies have waived any patient responsibility for COVID-19 related services. If he had COVID and was being treated for it, I’d be very surprised if the bill wasn’t an error on the hospital’s part.

I had surgery in 2013, 7 nights in hospital.
I paid 350 (not kidding, that was my surgery copay)
bill was 450,000 to insurance

I was rear-ended last year, went to the ER for three hours, and had to pay more than that.
