So when a kid wants to get an engineering degree, the main factor should be whichever school is closest to home? That's moronic.

Your flaw is that you think that the beauracracy that is higher education has created an appropriately priced market. There is a market failure here where prices have been articifially propped up by mortgaging the future of an entire generation.

It's actually worse than that.
Schools raise prices because STATE governments divest funding of colleges to easily resolve budgetary issues and keep the welfare spigot flowing, knowing they can get a backdoor tax subsidy via the federal government and their tax payers.

Cost should definitely be a consideration. That includes housing, and how far home is from the college he is going to.

I see a problem with the people taking the loans here, not the system. the system didnt force any of these decisions
Well, it kinda did, when probably 80% of the decent paying jobs for non-college graduates disappeared from the economy. Trying to support yourself without a college degree today is not the same as it was 40 years ago.

Exactly. It's the same reason healthcare costs are so out of whack ('insurance covers it, my co-pay is only $25'). People have no idea how much they're really spending, or how much things really cost.
I took out so many stupid loans in college, and I'm still paying for it. They were practically giving the loans away. A kid with no guidance can dig quite a hole for themselves.
These are mistakes my kid will never be allowed to make. He'll be so much better off than me because of it. My parents didn't know dick about money management, and they pretty much let me do whatever I wanted. Thousands of kids are in the same situation and making the same mistakes. It's kind of sad, really.

again, those cost are not exclusive to college, you pay that whether you go to college or not. How you choose to finance that portion of your life is not the fault of the school.
Also, how much do you think tuition would be if the schools received no support from the government?
Are you a member of the losuiana state legislature or a school superintendent?
