DENVER -- Marijuana sales in Colorado surpassed the $1 billion mark for 2016 after October amounts were released by the Colorado Department of Revenue.
The figure is from the legal sales of recreational and medical marijuana at Colorado shops. In 2015, sales just missed the $1 billion mark, totaling $996,184,788 ($587,834,219 for recreational, $408,350,569 for medical).
In October, sales dipped from the record high of a month earlier to $117.84 million ($82.79 million for recreational, $35.05 million for medical).
That brought statewide totals for the year to $1,092,159,291 ($720,731,127 for recreational, $371,428,164 for medical).
In September, a record $127.82 million in sales were recorded ($88.24 million for recreational, $39.58 for medical).
Voters approved Amendment 64 in 2012 and sales began on Jan. 1, 2014. Marijuana sales include a 2.9 percent sales tax, a special 10 percent sales tax and a 15 percent excise tax on wholesale transfers.

The state has raked in $49.7 million in taxes so far this year. The first $40 million goes for school construction projects with anything over that going to the state's public school fund.

Maybe enough old people will die in Louisiana to get recreational legalized by 2040. Not holding my breath though, as long as the Louisiana state legislature is still a functioning body.

In general i support legalization but not on the grounds of giving the government more money

I understand that LA state government has a stigma of corruption, but even if the law is specific how the tax revenue has to be allocated?

Is your high different from whatever elevation you are at?

The state isn't capable of doing such complicated things as appropriately allocating funds and properly distributing them. They will find a way to throw it away on some dumb study on infrastructure they'll never fix

Is this like TOPS where the took the money from casinos and gave it to schools while simultaneously taking away equal amounts of previous funding for schools? Or does that shite only happen in Louisiana?

And as long as the LA Sheriff's Association keeps paying for trips to Destin resorts for our lawmakers.

As well as blowhards like Newell Norman screaming and cursing at the legislature, and using Reefer Madness type dated arguments.

What's the alternative? Keep it illegal, and keep the boat loads of cash with gangs and cartels, while the government still gets a massive payout by prosecuting harmless marijuana users?

A portion of gaming tax revenue goes towards financial aid and classroom instruction at community, junior, and district colleges here.
If any revenue goes to school districts from the casinos, it would be from the gaming tax revenue that goes to the state's general fund, or to gaming towns and counties, but up to respective leadership discretion I guess.
So it's possible that the people who decide on those allocation of funds that could go to schools from gaming tax can say, "The schools are now getting X amount of funds from weed, so we can reallocate X amount of our funds from gaming tax elsewhere now."

The Feds give LA hundreds of millions to enforce marijuana laws.

this is how that will work
Sold to the bible beaters as money for the schools
Few elections later, new guy campaigns on cutting taxes
See that Weed is basically paying for schools
Cuts taxes so that Weed Sin taxes are basically paying for education
A few years later the budget is shite

I haven't noticed that, like with alcohol. I want to say no, mostly because the weed is so strong and fresh, you're gonna get high as frick no matter what.

I'd just be happy if Louisiana would change their cultivation laws, and remove the mandatory minimum sentence. 2-3 plants in your closet shouldn't be punished with time in Angola.

I don't smoke anymore but I would love to grow it.
