I was a dedicated CNN watcher (when I watched cable news) for years. I switched to Fox after the Boston bombings. During the Boston Bombing, CNN was carrying coverage outside their hotel miles away; Fox had cameras on scene.

Fox is the best source for news. Their affiliations with local news outlets allows them to get to the story faster than CNN. Plus, they cover stories like the IRS, NSA, Benghazi, AP, Fast and Furious, etc. If you watched CNN or MSNBC exclusively, you'd never know those things happened.

Is it biased? Sure, but less so than CNN/MSNBC. Also, people mistake the nightly programming (O'Reilly, Hannity, Kelly) for news programs; those are editorial shows.

Fox's biggest weakness is international coverage. They are very U.S.-centric. Best place to get overall news is news.google.com.

Bernays

Bernays, working for the administration of Woodrow Wilson during World War I with the Committee on Public Information, was influential in promoting the idea that America's war efforts were primarily aimed at “bringing democracy to all of Europe". Following the war, he was invited by Woodrow Wilson to attend the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. Stunned by the degree to which the democracy slogan had swayed the public both at home and abroad, he wondered whether this propaganda model could be employed during peacetime.

Due to negative implications surrounding the word propaganda because of its use by the Germans in World War I, he promoted the term "Public Relations".[6] According to the BBC interview with Bernays's daughter Anne, Bernays felt that the public's democratic judgment was "not to be relied upon" and he feared that "they [the American public] could very easily vote for the wrong man or want the wrong thing, so that they had to be guided from above." This "guidance" was interpreted by Anne to mean that her father believed in a sort of "enlightened despotism" ideology.[7]

LOL what. WSJ, yes, it's conservative but from a cautious and intellectual perspective.

NYT is very, very far left. Other than Douthat there is almost no right influence.

It's hit and miss. About 6 months ago there was a badass car chase in Denver. HLN had it live while Fox News was still yelling about Benghazi (probably). Car chases are Shep Smith's bread and butter but the network totally missed that one - it wasn't during his hour, but my point stands

Yeah, screw the opinion pages. I'll make my own opinions after reading the facts.

True, but there is a difference between biased news (NY Times, WSJ), partisan news (National Review, the Nation, etc.) and propaganda (Fox).

Or to put it another way: there is a difference between news with bias, and bias with news.

I doubt he knows the difference.

So am I. The only way newspapers show much bias in reporting is with selection. NYT is really, really bad at not reporting on anti-administration subjects.

I read the NYT for international coverage, but there are a lot of subjects that WSJ or even WaPo will cover that won't show up in NYT.

Manufacturing Consent, 1988, Noam Chomsky, the most articulate, reality based explanation of the propaganda model in our privately controlled mass media.

Looking at the national / US sections of WaPo, WSJ, and NY Times, they all seem roughly similar to me.

Just compare the next time something damaging to the administration comes out, especially with placement (page, below/above fold, etc.). If you check it enough it'll be apparent.

Now WSJ will probably do the same, but I think WaPo (liberal) and WSJ are both a little more even handed in how they do it.

There's nothing tin foil hat about the acceptance of linguistic manipulation aimed at influencing and guiding public opinion.

If you think that news is delivered to enlighten, you're woefully incorrect. They are a mouthpiece for those that own the medium and their band of prominent business leaders.

Another source of news that is screwed up with bias is ESPN. Basically CNN on steroids. Started using the Yahoo app so I ONLY see scores and play updates.

I'm still waiting on a explanation on why FOXN shows live footage of car chases.
