I just bypassed Louisville today and some of it looked shitty.

Agree with this. Did some training at Bliss a couple of years ago and there are some rough areas.

Detroit
My memory of driving through Detroit was so sitting in traffic running late to catch a flight. One thing I noticed from sitting in traffic was the number of cars completely rusted out from the bottom of the doors down. Guess you should never buy a used car from a cold climate city.
I was afraid I was going to miss my flight, so got off the interstate determined to find a way around the traffic. It was pretty hairy, don’t think I’d do that again.

Yeah I lived a few months up in the Detroit area. Basically every car was rusted on the bottom. And you can tell the interstates were designed for the model T , the on ramps were literally 25 yards long in some places with no merge lane and just shoot you into high speed traffic. The Grosse Point areas are suuuuuper nice, but the majority of the greater Detroit area is very dicey. It oddly reminded me of New Orleans in a lot of ways. I even found a gumbo restaurant some Katrina transplants opened. Not bad.

During my first year attending UTEP the dorm I lived in, Kelly Hall which is now offices, faced I-10 and the Juarez shacks across the river. At night we could look over there through the binoculars from our 6th floor window and see some interesting activity. Lots of bar fights out in the streets and an occasional armed robbery or shooting.
It was strange how it was so close to the U.S. but felt like we were watching a completely different world. This was back in the early 90's, before the cartel wars really ratcheted up, so I can only imagine what it's like over there nowadays.

I thought Bakersfield, CA looked terrible when I drove through. Billings, Montana also. Throw in any small town in New Mexico.
As for Baton Rouge - the worst parts to drive through are on I-10 between Dalymple and downtown and I-110 to Scenic. I-10 after the split is actually pretty nice. I-12 needs to be repaved between Airline and O'Neal.

Bakersfield isn't much better when you get off the interstate. Billings isn't bad.

Area around Main Street exit is a dried out marsh with old run down train tracks running through it, all you see of the 7th St exit is Walmart and hotels to the south and industrial and hotels to the north, and all you see around the 19th exit is hotels, Costco and Bozeman Ford.
So true. I was disappointed going through this year.
Great downtown though. Love the Bridgers!

a better question would be what city looks good from the interstate?
Bawcomville
Actually Couer D’lene, Idaho and Spokane, Washington.

better small city with derectional school?
Lafayette / ULL
Hattiesburg / ULM
Don't completely understand the question, but you see very little of Hattiesburg from the interstate.
As far as an overall comparison goes, I probably could have spent 4 years in Lafayette and been OK with it, but Hattiesburg seemed closer to things.

Knoxville, TN.
It depends on which way you are passing through. Farragut (spelling?) are going into Knoxville is pretty. And if you drive out of Knoxville toward Kingston it gets beautiful. Gotta love those smoke stacks. I've been hearing Knoxville is on the up and up. I can see why you might say that though given some areas. But In my opinion, Knoxville looks much nicer than most of Louisiana.
