Six U.S. oil executives held for three years in Venezuela were convicted and sentenced to lengthy prison terms Thursday.

Known as the Citgo 6, the men are all employees of the Houston-based refining company of the same name, which is owned by Venezuela's state oil company, PDVSA.

Five of the men, Gustavo Cárdenas, Jorge Toledo, Jose Luis Zambrano and Alirio Zambrano, and Tomeu Vadell, all U.S. citizens, were sentenced to eight years and 10 months. Jose Pereira, a permanent resident of the U.S., received 13 years, The Associated Press reports.

Thursday's sentencing is the culmination of a saga that began Nov. 21, 2017, the day the men arrived for what they were told was a sudden business meeting in the country's capital of Caracas. Once in the boardroom, however, military intelligence officers stormed the room. Officers demanded the men hand over passports and other identification cards, and then hauled them off to jail, the AP and the Financial Times report.

They were charged with embezzlement tied to a never-executed proposal to refinance around $4 billion of Citgo bonds. All six maintain their innocence.

No kidding. We don't have an extradition treaty with them. Could they even do much to them if they stayed here?

I can’t believe we let foreign governments own some of our companies. Forget foreign private companies (of which there are many) but a foreign government? Why?

I don’t know anything about this

But I think more executive types, especially bankers, need to go to jail more often

They were sent by their company for a “budget meeting.” They were told they’d be home for thanksgiving. As soon as they got in the board room the military came in and threw them in jail.

The Vadell family has been fighting for their release for years. I’m sure the other families have too. They have been to DC to get congressional support. The former New Mexico governor (who has negotiated other releases) has been to Venezuela. The Venezuelan government has jerked them around since 2017, even doing things like moving them to some kind of secure house outside the prison, then throwing them back in prison when Trump denounced Maduro. If China is asshoe, so is Venezuela.

We should have sent the modern day equivalent of "Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead" to the Venezuelan government.

I feel like there more to the story.

Trump has been pretty good about getting American citizens back, so I feel there is a reason we have not heard more about this.

Maybe they are innocent, sometimes people are not though.

Just an FYI for the board, CITGO is a wholly owned sub of PDVSA. They just have the US company here which any foreign National can have.

Uhhh--Citgo is not "some of our companies". Do you want our government to own companies??? Not me.

Personally I am happy the CITGO assets that are in the USA are here as the country loses more and more civil suits. By having assets in the USA those entities that win civil suits against them will have assets to grab.
