Cigar smokers spinoff thread- Need humidor help

I got a nice one as a gift but can't seem to get the humidity right. Been wiping with distiller water. Soaked the sponge also. Can't get it over 55

If it is a small tabletop humidor, the gauges are junk and are almost always not accurate at all.

I have a 50 count tabletop. I have the round humidification thingy that came with it. I also keep a "jigger" (no racist) full of water and one or two humisticks in there. I don't have a hydrometer but my cigars are never dried out. If you keep plenty cigars in it you need to add humidity, I have found. Don't let it dry out.
So,e recommend "conditioning" it prior to use. Look it up on YouTube.

Look up heartfelt industries humidity beads. I recommend 65% rH. 
Also, invest in a Caliber IV digital hygrometer.

What type of humidor do you have?
It is very possible as others have said, that your hygrometer is the problem. Definitely go digital. There are several brands. Don't go cheap or you'll be back in the same boat. Also, if your humidor is big enough, there are hydration systems with fans. Oasis makes a good one. I have them in my 2-500 capacity humidors.
Next, make sure you humidor is not in a place that gets sunshine through you windows. It'll mess with the temperature which can mess with the humidity as well.

Make sure your hygrometer is calibrated and not reading incorrectly. Easy process that you can YouTube involving table salt, distilled water, and a ziplock bag.
And as Coach said above, if you can - invest in an electronic humidifier. Pretty much set it and forget it.
