Churchill was very nearly killed in New York City in 1932 when he got out of his cab one night looking for Bernard Baruch’s home. The cabbie was lost and Churchill had been to Baruch’s home before. They were in the right neighborhood and he thought he could find the house if he got out and looked at the houses. He stepped off the curb and forgot that traffic flowed in the opposite direction. He walked in front of another car and was badly broken up, taking months to recover. He always had alcohol in his bloodstream and England had never had prohibition, so his injuries combined with his alcohol habit necessitated the “prescription”.
