The prospect of riding an elevator, let alone being stuck in one, is enough to make the claustrophobic among us squirm. But in China, a woman appears to have met the worst imaginable fate for those who fear confined spaces, apparently starving to death during a month stranded on an elevator by allegedly negligent workers.

quote:

Power to the elevator was cut Jan. 30, when a problem with it was reported. Workers, however, did not return until March 1, when they found the corpse. The Gaoling district government has now detained the maintenance crew; police said their gross negligence resulted in involuntary manslaughter. The AP reported that the workers cut the power without checking whether anyone was inside, but the L.A. Times noted that workers had “shouted” to see whether anyone was inside without looking themselves.

“The paramedics told us that when they found the body, her hand had already begun to deform,” another resident toldShanghaiist of the woman, who reportedly lived alone. “There were markings all over the inside of the elevator; it’s just too horrible.”

If WW3 ever breaks out with China elevators and escalators would be sent in and victory for the west would be assured.

First off she wouldn't die of starvation first. More like dehydration.

How the hell does an elevator in China go unused or ignored for a month?

I bet there were. Jesus Christ that would be an awful way to go out. I didn't eat the article, but any insight as to the type of building?

Now they're going to make a movie called "Trapped" like the ones they did for the divers in Australia waters and the one where they were stranded on a ski lift.

Horrible way to die

Sometimes, I imagine China as being the nation-equivalent of one of those hoarder's houses that are just full of absolute garbage and thousands of cats but given the lack of upkeep and general lack of care; there are dozens of dead and/or trapped cats buried under the heaps of trash but none of the other cats care, it's just a normal occurrence for them.

I'd have to think I could get out somehow. Pry the doors, open the ceiling, something.

I sure as shite would go down swinging though.

Im guessing no escape hatch out the top or anything? I'd be scared shitless attempting that thinking the power could go out at anytime. But if its been a week I think I'd be forced to try anything.

This. The title of the article is bogus from the start. You can only survive about a week without water. LINK

She more than likely died of thirst.

I remember reading of a similar incident in Alabama when power was cut to an escalator.
