The situation was so severe that a makeshift mini-economy emerged along the highway, with local entrepreneurs bicycling in to sell bottled water, instant noodles, and snacks at heavily inflated prices to stranded motorists.
So, capitalism? (Smiles in American)
Indeed. Love the initiative.

My Asian wife laughed at that.
I applaud her sense of humor.

Capitalist services provided during a communist gridlock.

We better watch out. That to me may make enough money to build a pipeline for Iran to Beijing.

This can't be right. I have always been told on here that Atlanta has the worst traffic in the world
We do. Atlanta doesn’t need some queer toll plaza to make a traffic jam.

Pretty sure I’d just abandon the vehicle at some point

Imagine camping in the left lane and then getting over 49 lanes to catch your exit.

New Circle Rd?
I am still blown away at how it's not fully limited access. Do not get me started on Man O' War. I use the "beltway" everyday to go to work. If you like to experience a blast from the past (80's), come drive on Kentucky roads.

How did they not have cars run out of gas? Surely a few got on with less than full tanks? Even IF they only turned the engine on to move ten feet forward, unless they just pushed their cars slowly. What else were they going to do with their time?

I was raised in Ashland and going to Lexington was "goin' to the big city" for us! The idea that there was a road that encircled the entire city left us completely dumb-founded.
I've been living in the Atlanta Metro area since about 2002 now and hadn't been back to Lexington in many, many years. A couple months ago I had to run up to check on a construction project on Man-o-War and thought I had a pretty good memory of the place. I was surprised that New Circle Road wasn't the size of I-285 around Atlanta (because that's how it seemed to me in my childhood memories) and I was severely disappointed that the Continental Inn is long since gone and lost in the annals of Lexington history. Dad always had to attend KOGA (Kentucky Oil & Gas) meetings there each summer and we three kids LOVED swimming in that massive indoor pool there.
One thing hasn't changed tough, Lexington and the surrounding areas in Fayette and Woodford counties is absolutely, stunningly beautiful.

Anyone besides me see Mario's face in 3rd pic? Focus on the white car pattern.
