Have your children asked you about your income? If they did, how did you respond?

My kids asked this the other day through a text message and gave a "why?" as an answer back.

You told them you couldn't buy that dirt bike didn't you?

They think y'all are poor now.

I would never disclose how much I make or have to my children.

The reply would be, “none of your business” as my parents said to me.

As long as there is food on their plate, clothes on their backs and a roof over their head they can go kick rocks. Tell them that

How old are your kids?

We teach my 6 year old the concept of money and to respect things, because it costs money to buy those things. He doesn't grasp just yet how MUCH money is worth on certain things, like a house or car, etc. He understands that mom and dad work hard, so he can have those things.

Pre teen my answer was “enough for everything we need and most of what we want”

Now that they are teens and choosing college majors and such I am more open. I give them an idea what it’s going to take to keep up the life they have been raised in.

Tell them, "I'd have a lot more disposable cash if your punk arse wasn't around"

I have replied: "Not enough to pay for whatever you're about to ask for"

Oldest is 13 and the youngest is 10.

I was thinking of a way to make it into a teachable moment by showing the value of education while showing the responsibilities of being an adult in case the question were to arise again. My parents had never disclosed their income to me and I remember specifically how much my mother hated people asking that question.

Your 10- and 13-year olds asked you this via group text? I feel like that is something you should respond to with a phone call or in-person convo. Not a one-word reply.

Is this how you normally talk to each other? Your kids text you major life questions? It sounds like your family has serious communication issues.

This usually happens after a kid’s friends calls his pops a “loser deadbeat.”

Mine are at that age where they are curious about it. Just tell them more than most and enough to pay for everything and still save.

I tell mine as they get older though I will go over finances with them b/c it is important to understand.....and when you see the generic % of people in debt on credit cards and lack of savings it's pretty scary.
