it takes maybe a minute to be distracted and something awful such as this to happen. I hope two young boys who I watch like a hawk but to say it could never happen to them..... i pray not.

i feel for that family, i cant imagine what they're going through

It can happen so easy. Probably just as easy in a cook out scenario as it is if the child is alone and somehow sneaks to the pool area. Everyone is socializing and having fun, it's easy not to notice a child quietly drowning.

They make pool alarm systems We have one that goes in the pool when no one is using. It goes off if anything makes a splash in it. Only problem is it is very sensitive. It can go off if a strong gust of wind blows.

We also have these wrist band alarm things that the kids wear and will alarm if they get wet.

So scary and it can happen to anyone. I feel sorry for this family.

The first summer we were in our house I got back from work and everybody was just getting out of the pool. Floaties came off of the kids and they were drying off. My daughter who was almost 2 at the time went back in the pool. There were 5 adults within 5 feet of her and none of us heard her go back in. I saw her out of the corner of my eye with just her mouth and nose above water fighting to keep it that way. I jumped in with all of clothes on and grabbed her. I have never been so happy to hear a kid cry because I knew she was ok.

Moral of the story, it can happen quick and it was silent. Thank God I happened to see her when I did. Another 30 seconds and I'm pretty sure my daughter would have drowned right in front of us. Floaties no longer come off until everyone is inside

While infant swimming lessons are great and all, a child can still drown

When they panic, they forget the techniques learned in swimming lessons.

How do you know this child didn't have these lessons? How do you know the child didn't know how to swim?

Too many assholes assume too much.

It can happen to anyone.

There are several options for putting fences up around pools in order to prevent kids from accidentally gaining access to pool area.

Going to say something unpopular here but this, to me, is no different than a parent leaving a kid in a hot car. Around water, any adult much less a parent should be subconsciously and consciously aware of the consequences.

best believe this is something that will haunt pretty much every adult that was present at that party

You also need to find an indoor pool during the off months, or at the very least, have them go through the training again as soon as it's warm enough the next season. A 6 month old won't recall 4 weeks of training a year later. It can turn dangerous if parents assume their child is good to go after a couple lessons when they are barely out of infancy.
