Chicago is one of my favorite cities in the country.

a mile or so west of Wrigley. Sure it's a rough area, like a lot of the city, but not unbearably so.
Not certain when you lived in the city, but North Center and Ravenswood (the neighborhoods in the locale you identify) are by no means "rough areas." They are fairly coveted residential areas with single family homes valued between $500k and $1MM+.
Additionally, I'm not certain why anyone would contend that the city shuts down at 9 PM. Most bars stay open until 2AM and there are several that don't close until 4/5AM.
Finally, the overwhelming majority of violence in Chicago is confined to certain isolated neighborhoods on the south and west side. It's simple to avoid these areas.
Chicago, San Fran, and NYC are the greatest cities in America by a comfortable margin.

The people I know that have lived there their whole life hate it and are ready to get out.

My favorite city so far. I didn't expect to like it because I'm just not normally a "big city" fan. But our visit there was incredible. As far as the touristy part of the city, it is just so perfectly designed. Looking forward to returning there in the future.

Exactly what I was thinking. Lincoln and Iriving Park is a very good part of town. Having said that, I live in Ravenswood, which is an amazing neighborhood, but there are still shootings and plenty of gang activity. The latin gangs work from Albany Park west down Lawrence till about Ashland where the Uptown gangs start taking over.
Every time I read a Chicago thread on this board it is laughable. People come here for a long weekend, stay downtown for 95% of the time, 5% at Wrigley, and they think they know the city. Yes, certain parts of the loop are quiet at night and on weekends. The life of this city is not downtown. It's in the neighborhoods.
