I cut off the quoted part where it says the "stalker" went in there in 1990. It had only been a few years at that point

1990? That's a different story. Motivation by Kalashnikov.

Communism volunteers for you, the U.S. is in the midst of finding that out now.

Can they not just fly a helicopter right over it and dump some stuff on it?

Dunno but I remember seeing footage on 60 minutes of flying over the exposed pile and the graphite was dark red hot.

With the proper PPE and precautions (for instance, holding the sensor of a Geiger counter out ahead of you on a stick so you know to stop fricking walking when it goes off the scale), it's a reasonable facsimile of "safe"-ish.

The vibe I get from this is, "Can we have a robot? We want a robot? We'll take good care of him! Pleeeeeeeease!"

Just shovel some sand on it or something. Geez. It's been sitting there since 1986, FFS.

And here's a picture of the "Elephant's Foot" next to the largest brass balls in the world

Pretty sure that guy (and the person that photographed him) were dead within a few weeks.

I see this was 10 years later. If this was in 86, they wouldn't have made it out of the room.

Early on, an FCM formation called the Elephant’s Foot was so hard scientists had to use a Kalashnikov rifle to shear off a chunk for analysis.

Seems familiar.
