Yes, that's how it works in MN. The jury can also find manslaughter even if he's only charged with second degree murder:

It is wrong that the courts in this country are allowed to charge you or something higher with intent to fall back to something else if they can’t meet the bar for conviction. That is ridiculous. Especially when done to appease hundreds of thousands of people who will never have a say in the matter or even step
