I won't necessarily be defending this particular situation, but as a whole LNCHBOX is right.
Please tell me how taking a lion that is old, close to death, and is no longer able to reproduce harms the population? This is normally how these hunts are arranged.
The hefty amount of cash then goes to fund the conservation efforts for the rest of the pride. (If you do your leg work and find the right organization)

Responsible, sustainable hunting of wildlife is the only way to combat localized overpopulation (which is bad because it leads to disease, strains on the food source, and dangerous interactions with human populations) in the controlled environments that are nature/game preserves. This is a fact. You may not like it, but there it is.

But it doesn't work like that. You can't possibly outpace the reproduction of the animals just by patching together more public land. It's a practical impossibility. And besides, what about roads, towns, mines, industry, etc.?

Except the lion Cecil was the head of his pride and I'm willing to bet this happens more often than not.
