So are you saying that a Catholic Godparent cannot be asked to legally assume this responsibility and set forth that very course of action with a Will? Because they can.
Also, to others - never did I say parents had unilateral authority over anything. If you're going to name a legal guardian in a will, the named is likely on board with it.

Sure they can, it has nothing to be with being a godparent though

I think if you told these parents your reservations, they would understand since you are coming from such a good place. You were probably chosen because they know these good qualities about you. They may not know many people like that. Just talk it out with them.
I only see these people once a year at best so I don't have any deep rooted relationship with them.

Then what makes you think you will have the opportunity or desire

to contradict what they might say religiously or in turn, abide by their beliefs because they chose me to be their son's godparent.
That said, you seem really uncomfortable with it. So simply explain that to them.

This means you are doing something right. We should never be settled and satisfied on a spiritual level.

Nah, every good Parrain has to make sure his birthday gift and christmas gift is a little better than everyone elses. That is what a godparent is all about IMHO
Well the two god kids I have I would do that regardless of having the title of Parrian

I have 5 godchildren. It needs to stop.

It is only separate because the church has no authority in the matter.
Can the parents choose a Catholic Godparent based on their willingness to legally assume responsibility of the child as well as perform the Church driven functions of the figurehead role?

Anyone can. Being a Godparent is irrelevant. That has zero bearing on this discussion.

It may or may not, OP did not say. I grew up in a Catholic town and it was local custom for the named Godparent to be named legal guardian in the will and accept this responsibility. The Church just had no authority in the matter.

I'm Catholic and my god parents were a Jew and a Non Denominational Christian.
Posted on 8/21/14 at 11:13 am to SportzIQ3235
Nope. That would be disrespectful. It's a big honor for them to choose u and I'm sure they put plenty of thought in that decision.

Are you intentionally being dense or is it natural?
