Get that patriot a coat.
I know a couple guys that work for the S&WB and can completely understand how the catch basins are being glossed over.
I forget what OT and Pelitard on here actually worked as a contractor after Katrina cleaning the catch basins and said they found guns and all kinda shite in them. May have been Epic

Shut your whore mouth. Now, help me get my car off the Neutral Ground so that I can drive to the store and make groceries.

That's a curb inlet. They are called catch basins. The inlet level of the discharge pipe is a few inches higher than the bottom of the basin to "catch" the sediment and not allow it to continue flowing. It's meant to be cleaned out every so often, except in NO.

the sad thing is that in sep and oct 2005 we cleaned out every single catch basin in orleans parish with vacuum trucks and shovels. every single one
that's why when you got back home there was paint on the catch basin lid

Was there not a preventative program put into place to continue the efforts, or did it just fall off?

no idea that wasn't my area
we got paid to clean them out...
everywhere there were oak trees the catch basins looked just like the one in the OP

I've inspected construction on large scale projects and interstate/highways in 6 states, and not just on the South. If you write storm drain on a report, you'll get your arse chewed by the Resident Engineer.
This is nothing like someone saying "making groceries."

I bet if you call them catch basins around the hicks that install them anywhere else in country they'll call you a city slickin pussy

Solution
Those things still require regular service emptying out all the shite that it keeps from clogging the pipes.
And at $16-18k apiece, not including the construction nightmare of putting them in, that's pretty fricking far from a solution.

There's an old saying, that when you take a new job..look for what's currently at a 1, and turn into a 10, as quickly as possible.
Yeah, no one ever said that.

Well, they're referred to as catch basins in most dot spec books.
And I honestly don't give a shite what hicks say about me. Considering hicks usually do shoddy work, they'll probably say much worse about me when I fail their inspection.
And I am a "city slicker" from the South. They can call me a pussy if they want. But considering my inspection is how they get paid by the states, it's never happened to my face. So who's the real pussy?

We had one of those in our front yard. My dad would make sure it didn't fill up with debris. Because you know if they fill up then your neighborhood floods and shite.

Word among the top at the EOC meetings on flood response is that the Sheriff's Office has been offering to get its inmate work crew back from the state facility (since Mitch made them get rid of in his justification to make the prison too small) and have three crews cleaning basins every day, but Mitch is balking.

You obviously have never had the experience of dealing with the New Orleans Sewer and Water Board.

I thought one seen inmates in green stipes jumping in and out of trucks at the work release on Broad recently... has Mitch shut that down.
I know they used to keep them at conchetta too but as of a couple months back they were using that as a temp building for p&p... what a shite hole

You have to be shitting me. I assumed catch basins that require crews and vacuum trucks were some large central drainage structure. They are street side storm drains? The ones we used to clean out as kids with a rake and a shovel? GTFO.
You dumbass kids should have unionized so you wouldn't have had to complete that work for less than $80/hour on the tax payers' dime with mandatory breaks and paid vacations. Stupid kids
