And a company of this size is but a drop in the bucket on the world's supply chain stage.

Needs more buzzwords.

I think this could be the future. Dealerships no longer would need acres of land to stock cars. Also sales force is not needed. Order on line. No negotiating. Financing etc. done by an hourly rate bookkeeper.

Only need land for maintenance. Cars come in from an order and 1-2 days off the lot.

Carvana and Car Gurus etc. are the used market. Maybe the dealerships continue with trade in's. Haven't thought this one through.

Obviously.

Decades ago it was common to order your new car and dealers did not keep a large new car/truck inventory. In today's world people want their shite now.

While no inventory is currently working, it's because no one has any. Once things are back to normal dealers are going to have lots full of cars again as they don't want to lose a sale to the guy down the street that has a car the buyer can drive away with that day.

Never gonna happen…unless you expect these people to work for free.

I did not say they would work for free. I said they are not needed. So no Commissions. Very small staff of fulfilment to process paper work. I just ordered a car and the sales person was not needed to show me how to use the internet and select options. For that matter I could have went straight to the manufacture and only use the dealership as a drop location for final prep and delivery.

Look at the Hyundai Teluride. Plenty on the lot in the Lafayette area.

We bought a Santa Fe, $1000 over sticker but we got a lot for our trade and zero % financing.

I was t “happy” but I was happy. And I like my car. Just couldn’t justify the larger car with the large price.

Edit: I asked why they had so many cars when no one else did .. told me that they make their own steel. All I knkw is they have cars on the lot and what I wanted was already en route and actually got here a week early.

I will got shot down for this. But no can convince me that this shortage isn't manufactured at this point. No good reason why things shouldn't be easing by now.

Agree. My order was accepted and went through with no issues. That means everything was available, at least on my order. The issue now is rail capacity and getting cars to the dealership. That is the current state from my recent experience. Rail capacity is running at about 60% according to those involved in my transaction and from other I have spoken with

Actually doing this with 2 different brands. Same results thus far

If car sales were an hourly wage job, no one would do it. For one a company would have to pay around $20 to $25 an hour for an employee to make around what a salesman makes off of commission. The job itself is a very time consuming job (12 to 13 hours a day easily) and dealing with customers (of all walks of life) doing the process, cleaning the car, making sure the customer leaves happy because they can give you a bad survey which puts your job in jeopardy. You can find a multitude of jobs with less BS that would pay a compareable hourly wage (let’s be real a manufacturer isn’t going to pay close to $20 an hour)

Also you are not factoring in the sales managers who are in charge of pricing the vehicles, working the sales numbers. They know around how much they can afford to lose on a deal based off inventory, based on what the manufacturer expects the store to make in a month etc. They make money off of the vehicle sale as well.

Also the finance manager that has to be certified by the state and is in charge of submitting your paperwork to the state. Do they get paid hourly? No, they make commission off of the backend of the vehicle in warranties.

the whole ecosystem is built off of commission. Not just the salesman you speak with. You can’t switch to an hourly rate because quite frankly it is not possible in the slightest. The whole point is to squeeze as much money out the customers as possible. Going to an hourly wage removes all of that, and more importantly removes all of that extra money being squeezed out of the customers pocket into the manufacturers pocket. So why would the manufacturer shoot themselves in the foot and lose money? I assure you the manufacturer and it’s sales employees love money more than your time and convenience.
