Car shopping websites

Hey ot-ers, quick question: I have a friend shopping for a cheap car that will last for approximately 5-8 years. What auto shopping websites do you find most useful? Carmax, autotrader, cars.com, etc? Or just getting a used from dealer? I understand she should shop around, but just looking for suggestions on a starting point. any suggestions appreciated

Shop around. Sometimes you get great deals in unexpected places. Also, ask friends. They may know of someone who's selling.

I enjoy the interface for autotrader for looking online.
You leave out way too many details to actually make suggestions on what she should get.

Sorry, her car's motor blew today so she is desperate to find a reliable car to get from point a to point b.
Her main interests are reliability and cost-efficiency. I suggested an asian car, but she is just nervous since she doesn't have any experience buying cars.

1) figure out what you want. Edmunds is a pretty decent resource, as are car magazines and websites. Read some reviews. Narrow it down.
2) go to cars.com. (Autotrader has many of the same cars but they have 3 categories of listings based on $ paid, so it's more difficult to sift through). Type in exactly what you want. Model, year, trim level, engine, even color if she's picky. Then sort by lowest price within whatever distance she's comfortable going. I look all over the country. That gives you a decent baseline for expected cost.

She can put down up to $4000 down, but she is not looking to spend very much on monthly payments. probably less than 300 monthly

Cargurus was my preferred website when I was looking for a vehicle a couple months ago. It seems to have more search options than any of the other websites around, and is constantly updated. It'll also show you how long the dealer has had the car for sale, and what the pricing history for that period has been.

I have had 5 cars that I got at least 240,000 miles out of each of them. I did the maintenance religiously.
Usually, leasing only allows 13,000 miles a year then charges you for each mile over that. It can get very expensive if she drives a lot.

True car is the bomb. Bought an Explorer a month ago. Local dealer said True Car was unrealistic and "fantasy land". Found another dealer 140 miles away that sold me the vehicle well well below True Car pricing. I think it was spot on the whole time.

First I decided what kind of car I wanted to buy, including the year.
Then I searched on cars.com and autotrader.com
I found an '09 Civic EX with moonroof for 16K after I had totalled an '08. It was probably 2 years old with 16K miles on it. The insurance paid me for the wrecked car and I had money left over from the new(er) car purchase to put in my pocket.
