I travel for work a lot. When I rent a car, I usually rent from National. Their tv commercials say you can pick any car in the aisle even if it is an upgrade, but I have never found an upgrade available in the aisle.

Has anybody here ever got a free upgrade from National?

Always use National, upgrade or not there are normally a lot of vehicles to choose from. Good enough for me.

If you are an emerald club member, you can pick any car. I pick upgrades all the time. Costs $35/day plus taxes.

I go through COSTCO, they usually have the best deals and I can add my wife as a driver for free

I didn't know that, thanks. I normally reserve a "Premium".

National is great. We had a problem with the car we were supposed to get not being ready and they upgraded me to a Lincoln Navigator at no extra cost.

You must not have joined the emerald club. After so many rentals you get bumped to executive level and then you pick from an isle. Download the app

Yeah, do that. I always reserve an economy car, and pick any one in the emerald aisle. Same price as the economy.

Alamo and Enterprise gave me the best customer service but Im sure that is based largely on location

You should see if they’ll retroactively add the rentals to your account, If you rent as much as you mentioned

Serious question, how to other car rental companies stay in business? Are they just there in case National runs out of cars??

My company only allows rentals from Avis and budget. We used to have hertz but the contract pricing got to high so they switched. Our company has about 4K people in the org that travels almost weekly so we give a ton of business to Avis. So, to answer your question, yes, they all stay in business.
