Your thermostat could be stuck open. You should probably start there.

This. If the water isn't flowing, nothing is cooling. But it is probably stuck closed.

Check your radiator and reservoir first.
Definitely do this, but it will probably be low since it's been overheating, so be sure to fill it up if it's low now and then keep a watch on it. Low coolant is usually a symptom and not a cause.

Typically engines will overheat under load if the thermostat is crapped.

Overheating at idle and cooling at speed is typically a sign of a fan problem. There are certainly other possibilities, but no forced air is usually the culprit. If putting the heater on full bore alleviates the problem, the engine fan is almost certainly the issue.

Fan motor. Check fan relays in your fuse box first. Could be a 5$ fuse. If it is the fan they usually arent hard to change out and they are in expensive depending on the vehicle obviously. Youtube is your friend. If it doesnt overheat while driving then the radiator is probably operating properly and the air from driving is helping pass over the engine to cool it off. If it overheats no matter what you may have a radiator issue. Get near the bumper and look around for leaks on the ground while its running. Very cheap problem to fix and very easy to do yourself if its either one of those issues maybe 60-150$ max and an hour of very light work.

ETA cheapest step just to make sure is find thermostat give it a tap. Pretty much replace the Thermostat no matter what here. Its like 6$ and is a crucial piece and is only a bolt or two. Next check fuses and relays then check fan motor it should come on when the temp gauge starts to go above normal.

That's incorrect.

Actually, since I used the term may, it's absolutely correct. If it's a similar issue to mine, this *may* alleviate the overheating.

If it is not similar to mine, then it *may* not.
