I’ve noticed after I really get in it, 6500+ rpm shifts, and I let off the gas....I have a distinct sulfur smell. Let off at 125 today and the compartment instantly had a sulfur smell.
Exhaust leak?

Bad smell is an unfortunate byproduct of excellent gas mileage.

Going that fast, you scared the crap out of yourself. That’s where the sulfur smell comes from.

Your catalytic converter is going out. It’s supposed to turn that sulphur smell into an odorless gas

Exhaust speed and volume is too much for the converter to fully catalyze so you get hydrogen sulfides outside the exhaust system. Quick reduction in speed is causing a reverse flow through the cabins air exhausts so sucking in some of the H2S. Human's smell detects H2S in very low concentrations.
As long as it is only present in these rare situations it is nothing to be concerned about.

Thanks. I’d guess I have 2. One’s letting out.

Could also be what obtuse said but it’s definitely a converter issue

Thanks for the response. That’s the only time I get it.

Cats. Remove them or install a catless downpipe and code out the error message.

Id love to upgrade my exhaust. The engine at full song is outright glorious, but I could use some throat to it as well.

When gasoline reaches the catalytic converter, the converter transforms the trace amounts of hydrogen sulfide into the odorless sulfur dioxide. ... A broken or jammed catalytic converter cannot properly process the sulfur gases and will cause your car to smell like rotten eggs

Had an 84 Bronco that did this.

Unless we are talking about a pure performance car de-catting is probably too much of a PITA for most people. His car probably has a 400 CPSI cat (cells per square inch or cel for short) moving to a 200 or 100 cel cat if available would be a better choice and if properly designed wouldn't leave you with having to deal with CELs all the time. My 997 Turbo had a test pipe and I will never do it again. Driving around in an expensive car with a CEL on the dash is rather frustrating.
