Why not a truck? He is your son.

My father gave me this advice when I was a young man, and it proved to be sage advice. The only important thing that our vehicle is for, beside transportation, is to protect your child’s life. Get him something large. It’s a matter of simple physics. If he has a wreck and survives, you have done your job. The extra gas is chicken feed compared to his life. I hope this is of some help to you.

Great looking and driving cars.
My brother had one though and it broke down a lot.
I wanted that damn car when I was in highschool so bad I could taste it.
I ended up with a Chevy Monza hatchback with at 350 5 speed. Thing was a damn monster for a small car. Almost died in that thing a few times

Used Volvo
Hah. When I had my Volvo SUV (out of warranty) indie mechanic used to recoil in horror the numerous times I had to drive up seeking service. Expensive as hell to fix too.

We bought our 16 year old daughter a 2009 accord that had 65k miles on it for around 12k. I’m hoping that thing will last her through college. My oldest daughter has a 2008 accord and had over 278k miles on it. The AC went out and now she drives a 2024 Corolla and she will drive that thing till she is done with all her schooling and is making her own money. You can’t go wrong with a Toyota or honda.

We got a 2007 Ford Ranger for $14,000. It's a great little truck.
I just bought a 2006 Ranger extended cab 2wd a couple of months ago for $1,500 bucks. It had 155,000 miles on it.
The owner had tried to dodge a deer in the road, but it still damaged the passenger side doors and bed. The doors still function properly and the bed damage is pretty light.
I've been driving it every day. It's a V6 Auto gets pretty great gas mileage and hasn't needed anything yet. Hasn't used a drop of oil. Even the A/C works great.
It's the first Ranger I've owned and I'm very impressed.
