nah as you remember I listed porsche as a real sports car, and the turbo is one of the better ones. I had a 996 GT2 a while back, I have a 997 RS still I dont remember anything extraordinary service wise like some other sports cars I've had. I remember spark plugs having about $1500 of labor bc they needed a full day of work, other than that great car without many issues.

You have good taste johnny,as long as you dont mind paying to play with expensive rear tires, and above OT acceptable oil change prices, the turbo is a great car. If you buy a stick I think you may even see some appreciation in your ownership period. Cars with sticks are reaching ridiculous levels of appreciation these days from that era especially ferrari and lamborghini relative to their semi automatic counterparts.

I have a 2001 996 (non-turbo, sorry) and have had very little trouble with the car. 186,000 miles on it (had 56,000 when I bought her) and she is extremely reliable.
No IMS issue but have replaced the water pump twice.

My two suggestions, be sure to have the car taken to a Porsche dealership for a Pre Purchase Inspection and go to Porsche Owners Forum and browse through the forum for the model you are looking to buy. Lots of info there.

Good luck!

Great points- I'm looking at the Cayman S preowned right now or a 911.

I'm a slow-poke so I'd rather have a base 997 than a 996 Turbo. Both are in the mid $30s for decent examples. A Carrera is as fast as I need to go. Trouble is, with the early 997s you still have to worry about IMS. I think it was finally sorted in late '06 and all of the '07 and later cars.

Thoughts on 917 Cayman- the S model has 350 vs 300 for base model. Will that make much of a difference?

I guess it depends on what you're coming from. If your current car is an F150, you probably would be fine in the regular one. If you're used to driving something fast, probably not. I test drove an Audi S4 (333HP) and it felt great compared to my SUV.

The suspension on the S is much better as well, not just the additional HP.

Depends on what kind of driving you do. Going straight down the highway? Get the base model and save some money. The 'S' comes into its own once you start cornering at speed.
