For most diseases that are serious and/or fatal there is a crossover period where they allow those on placebo to start receiving the study drug if the early data is promising.

It’s usually against the standard of care for that particular condition. So she would still be getting treatment for it.

That’s what I was going to say. Clinical trials don’t typically sort participants into a group that isn’t receiving the currently accepted standard of care. Your buddy needs to research how clinical trials work or talk to the trial coordinator at their facility.
