Can someone explain the GFS 00z vs 06z vs 12z vs 18z

Are they just the same thing 6 hours later or are the different models?

00z simply means 00UTC or midnight.

So to compare you need to match the forecast hour.

The current picture is forecast hour 222.

The 00z you posted is forecast hour 234 or +12

So look at the 00z Dec 15 2017 Forecast Hour: [222] to compare.

Correct. Also:

12Z = 7 am CDT
18Z = 1 pm CDT
00Z = 7 pm CDT
06Z = 1 am CDT
