Can Somebody Please Explain why There are Expiration Dates on License Plates?

I got pulled over last night (didn't get a ticket but it's beside the point) and she said my license plate was expired. Why in the frick is there an expiration date on a license plate? Who actually knows when their license plate isn't up to date? Seems like a pretty minuscule thing for them to try and write a ticket to me.
Eta: I forgot to add I know that I know I'm supposed to get a new one in the mail but I haven't gotten one and it's been since October.

You get a sticker every few years when your registration is renewed.

the aluminum in the license plate starts to go bad after about 2 years. when you bring your car in for an inspection, ask them to change it out for you.

Dude...if she said something as stupid as that, she was obviously trying to pick you up. If she wasn't, she would have said that your registration sticker on your license plate had expired. Missed opportunity.
